There is much talk today in policy circles about "transforming urban space" to make our cities both more efficient and equitable, i.e. by giving access to a majority of people who remain currently marginalised from the services, amenities and varying economic opportunities of urban life. Would spatial reconfiguration bring about more efficiently functioning cities and would these interventions bring about material change in the well-being and livelihoods of the majority of people living in them?

The regional training on the PSUP Phase II implementation methodology (Anglophone) took place from 2-9 February in Mauritius. Uganda, Namibia, Nigeria, Mauritius and The Gambia participated in the workshop, co-organized by the Housing and Slum Upgrading Branch and the Regional Office for Africa and hosted by the Government of Mauritius.

Though the importance of mass transportation in supporting urban life, differs among cities, the Lagos State Government’s yearning for a mass transit system propelled by light rail cannot be divorced from a resolve to achieve an inclusive growth in a state that has since become a mega city.
