Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries Small Island Developing States (UNOHRLLS). Subprogramme 3 of the Office is mandated to foster achievement of the development aspirations set in the 'SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway. The incumbent reports to Chief of the Policy Development, Coordination, Monitoring and Reporting Service, under the overall guidance of the Director. For more information see: http://unohrlls.org/
Under the supervision of the Chief of the Policy Development, Coordination, Monitoring and Reporting Service, the incumbent will act as the focal point for the Subprogramme on SIDS, monitor the implementation of the SAMOA Pathway. The incumbent will provide substantive services to intergovernmental processes relevant to sustainable development. The incumbent will undertake the advocacy effort in favour of SIDS in partnerships with relevant parts of the UN. The incumbent will mobilize international support and resources for the implementation of the Programme.
The incumbent will perform the following functions:
- Monitor the implementation of the SAMOA Pathway and assess the sustainable development in SIDS as the focal point of the Subprogramme;
- Provide necessary substantive services to the intergovernmental processes relevant to the sustainable development of SIDS, particularly the High-level Political Forum and the General Assembly and provide substantive services to the SIDS in their effective participation in the intergovernmental processes;
- Provide support to the mobilization of international support measures and resources for the implementation of the SAMOA Pathway;
- Support the advocacy work of the office in close cooperation and coordination with the relevant parts of the United Nations;
- Participate in the preparation of the Secretary-General's annual progress reports on the implementation of the SAMOA Pathway;
- Participate in the preparation of the annual progress report of the Secretary-General on progress in the implementation of the SAMOA Pathway.
- Prepare publications, statements, presentations, background and issue papers, briefing materials, talking points and minutes of the meetings, and represent the Office at various inter-agency and expert meetings;
- Prepare written outputs issues notes, reports, statement, and briefings;
- Provide substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences pertaining to SIDS;
- Organize and conduct training seminars and workshops for government officials of SIDS; Participate in planning and assist in the preparation of the unit's work plan and budget requirement.

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in sustainable development, international relations, economics, public policy or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience on sustainable development issues including three years at the international or regional levels is required. Experience in intergovernmental processes is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English (oral and written) is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is an advantage.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
