Organizational Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

UN-Habitat promotes the stronger commitment of national and local governments as well as other relevant stakeholders to work towards the realization of a world with economically productive, socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable cities and other human settlements.

The UN-HABITAT - Housing and Slum Upgrading Branch (HSUB) internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is unpaid and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, Housing and Slum Upgrading Branch, and in cooperation with the administrative team, the intern is expected to accomplish the following listed duties and responsibilities:

  • Support PMO by analyzing data and creating strategic communication products, such as presentations, webpages and other materials relating to finance; analyzing data extracted from the UN ERP and/or other systems.
  • Analysis and reconciliation of ledgers, general office administrative tasks and other tasks that may be assigned
  • Assist in the drafting of various documents, e.g., minutes of meetings, briefing notes, policy documents, draft notes to file on meetings etc;
  • Assist with tasks related to inventory management, procurement and archiving.
  • Provide other administrative support for daily office operations.
  • Assist with the preparation of management reports.
  • Draft supporting documents such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), templates and related documents to facilitate the implementation of all administrative functions.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);

c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of study: Studies in Studies in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field is preferred.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
