Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes. UN-Habitat works to ensure that cities become inclusive and affordable drivers of economic growth and social development.
UN-Habitat, as the lead agency within the United Nations system for coordinating activities in the field of human settlements, is mandated through the Habitat Agenda to take the lead in disaster, mitigation, and post-crisis rehabilitation capabilities in human settlements. The Risk Reduction and Rehabilitation Branch works to increase the resilience of cities to the impacts of natural and human-made crises and undertake rehabilitation in ways that advance sustainable urban development. The branch provides technical support to field operations, regional offices and other thematic branches of the agency to facilitate the implementation of urban risk reduction and durable crisis response approaches. The branch consists of three units: Risk Reduction and Resilience Unit, Settlements Recovery Unit, and Shelter Rehabilitation Unit.
The UN-HABITAT Risk Reduction and Rehabilitation Branch internship is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
This internship is primarily located in the Settlements Recovery Unit and Shelter Rehabilitation Unit in the Risk Reduction and Rehabilitation Branch, under the supervision of UN-Habitat's Emergency Director. The selected intern will also support the City Planning Extension and Design Unit in the Urban Planning and Design Branch.
The selected intern is expected to undertake the following tasks: Under the Risk Reduction and Rehabilitation Branch
1.Support coordination of the development of concepts, guidelines, tools, policies and strategies for disaster management in human settlements;
2.Monitor a broad range of emergencies, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, conflicts, etc. and deliver information on the relief and recovery operations once disasters have occurred;
3.Develop and populate the Emergency Response Portal, by updating with relevant information;
4.Assist with activities related to strengthening the nexus between humanitarian, development and peace work;
5.Contribute to the development of communications/promotional materials for the branch by providing suggestions and assistance, and creating content for social media;
6.Support day-to-day ad-hoc support to shelter and settlements units, and other duties as assigned by the Emergency Director.
Under the Urban Planning and Design Branch: 7.Assist with the branch's activities in supporting planning for integrated refugee and host communities, in particular support to desk research, visibility activities, and reporting;
8.Support development of normative outputs by assisting in analyzing development planning projects, contributing to preparation of documents, presentations and other dissemination materials;
9.Assist in the implementation of different project outputs, such as urban planning methodology review, development of tools, documentation and evaluation of practices;
10.Contribute to proposing and analyzing scenarios and design options for planning and design projects;
11.Contribute to the organization and the preparation of field missions and scoping missions including preparation of background materials, case studies and fact sheets.

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred area of study: Student in terminal years of University Studies or no longer than one year from graduation in Political Science, Social Science, International Studies, Urban/Regional Planning, Architecture, Urban Management or related field that is relevant in sustainable urban development.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
