The Housing and Development Board (HDB) is awarded for providing one of Asia's and the world's greenest, cleanest and most socially conscious housing programmes. For over half a century, HDB has housed a growing population and played an integral part in Singapore's nation building. Today, more than 8 in 10 Singaporeans live in HDB apartments and more than 9 in 10 of them own the apartment in which they live.

Kunshan Municipal People's Government

The Kunshan Municipal People's Government is awarded for an innovative approach to granting migrants the right to essential services in the city. Drawing some 800,000 job seekers every year, Kunshan holds five employment fairs every week. In the last two years it has helped more than 200,000 people get work, in a city where modern, new accommodation has increased per capita living space from 12 sq. metres in 1999 to 40 sq. metres today.

Sustainable Urban Renewal Programme

Vienna Municipality's Sustainable Urban Renewal Programme is awarded for putting people and their views first in a model urban renovation programme it is imparting to other cities in eastern Europe. Under its so-called "soft urban renewal" drive that started in 1984, the city is careful to consult its residents on changes and take their views into account – rather than opt for the demolition of run down neighbourhoods and compulsory relocation.

Austin Energy Green Building, United States

Austin Energy Green Building is awarded for being the first in the United States to lead the way in sustainable building practices and commercial construction. The city-owned organization, founded in 1991, provides valuable electricity, fuel, water and construction savings. It also ensures that buildings are energy efficient, thus making a positive, sustainable, durable contribution to the city. The Austin Energy Green Building is consulted nationally and internationally.

Yakutsk City Administration, Russia

The Yakutsk City Administration is awarded for implementing a new cold climate urban development plan. Implemented in 2009 and 2010, the plan has provided the eastern Siberian city with a new drainage system, better roads, a landscaped environment, new apartments for 5,000 families and retrofitting buildings to make them energy efficient. Yakutsk, which suffers extremely cold winters, is continuing to winterise its urban infrastructure so as to save as much energy as possible.

The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART), Malaysia

The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) project is awarded for improving the management of storm water and peak hour traffic. The project is an initiative of the National Security Council and MMC-Gamuda, a joint venture between Gamuda and Marsch and McLennan Companies, two of Malaysia's leading engineering companies. Stretching for 9.7 km (6.0 miles) the SMART is the longest multi-purpose tunnel in the world.

The Centro de Investigacion y Desarrollo de Estructuras y Materiales (CIDEM) in Cuba is awarded for blazing a new trail in low cost, low-energy, eco-friendly building materials. The centre is a research and development institute attached to the Faculty of Construction at the Universidad Central de Las Villas.

Wintringham, Australia

Wintringham is awarded for helping provide accommodation for about 1,000 elderly people in need every night. Established in 1989, Wintringham in the city of Melbourne is an internationally recognised non-profit welfare organization which has helped influence government policy to include housing for homeless elderly people. This is the first time UN-HABITAT recognises an initiative devoted to the elderly, and the first time an Australian project has been awarded.

Ecotact was awarded a Best Practice Award in 2010 for the idea of Ikotoilet - thinking beyond a toilet to enhancing sanitation in urban areas and low income settlements in Kenya.

Ecotact is a Social Enterprise incorporated in Kenya in 2006 voted Africa Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2009/2010 by the World Economic Forum.
