Rwanda celebrates 50th Independence Day

Across the borders, the Republic of Rwanda celebrated its birthday marking 50 years of independence from the yoke of its French colonizers. World leaders attended the celebrations marking a journey of resilience. Reporter Willis Raburu attended the celebrations in Kigali which also offered lessons for other African countries.

“50 years is a short time in the life of a nation, but it is long enough to have made significant changes in the lives of our citizens,” said President Paul Kagame. He added, “But we will only succeed if we are brave and honest enough to accept responsibility for our actions and reject the convenient attitude of playing the victim and blaming others.”
