European Commission gives green light to water as human right campaign

The European Commission (EC) has registered the first European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) online campaign Water is a human right. The campaign asks the EU to declare access to water and sanitation as a human right for all citizens in Europe (as the UN already has), setting binding targets for all Member States to achieve universal coverage in all EU countries. The ECI is an instrument which allows the public to bring forward proposals for legal acts to the EC provided they have a million supporting signatures from at least seven member states.
