The Huairou Commission and UN-HABITAT (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) are seeking nominations of persons suitable to serve on the Advisory Group on Gender Issues (AGGI). Nominations will be accepted from a wide variety of stakeholder groups, including grassroots, civil society, private sector and academia, among others.
This Advisory Group gives stronger emphasis to the importance of gender equality and women's empowerment and will put women on the front line as vital agents of change in human settlements work.
Attached below, please see the Terms of Reference explaining the purpose, function and expectations for AGGI members, a note to further explain the process of nomination, and a nomination form to be submitted via email to AGGINominations@huairou.org
Background
The Huairou Commission has been lending its expertise to UN-HABITAT (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) in the establishment of an Advisory Group on Gender Issues (AGGI) to the agency. Mandated by the UN-HABITAT Governing Council by a resolution passed at its twenty third session in April of 2011, the AGGI will advise the UN-HABITAT Executive Director on all issues related to gender mainstreaming in the work of UN-HABITAT. The Group will also provide strategic guidance and policy advice on the development, implementation and assessment of the Agency's strategic plans, including its gender equality action plans.
In February 2012, the Huairou Commission worked with UN-HABITAT to convene a number of experts on women and urbanization to develop terms of reference for the AGGI. The AGGI will be launched during the sixth session of the World Urban Forum (WUF6) in Naples in September 2012.
